The Fayette County Diabetes Coalition was formed to look at diabetes as a community problem, rather than only a medical problem. People with diabetes and their families, health professionals and other concerned individuals can work together to prevent and control diabetes. The community coalition will work creatively to tackle problems associated with diabetes.

The Fayette County Diabetes Coalition meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 9:00 a.m. at the Fayette County Health Department Annex located at 805 Newtown Circle Lexington, KY 40511.

Abbott Diabetes Care, a division of Abbott Laboratories, is voluntarily recalling 359 million test strips used by people with diabetes to monitor blood glucose levels. Diabetes is a serious disease that strikes nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States.  An additional 79 million, or one in three American adults have pre-diabetes, which puts them at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes.  Diabetes is called a “silent killer” because a quarter of those with the disease-7 million- do not know they have it.  For many, diagnosis may come seven to ten years after the onset of the disease.  Therefore, early diagnosis is critical to successful treatment and delaying or preventing some of its complications such as heart disease, blindness, kidney disease, stroke, amputation and death.
